The Yorkshire Terrier starter kit

Everything your future Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie) needs to move in, annex the couch, and immediately run the household β€” hand-assembled by DOGSCIENCEβ„’ for a toy chaos unit.

The Yorkshire Terrier is a 4-pound tornado of pure delusion. This dog believes it is a German Shepherd. It believes it can fight you. It believes it can fight other dogs. It believes it can fight a moose. None of these things are true, and yet the conviction is unshakeable. Yorkies are spicy little runway models with the temperament of a Medieval knight β€” brave, stubborn, and absolutely certain of their own importance.

They were bred to hunt rats in mills and textile factories, which explains both the silk-like coat and the refusal to back down from literally anything. Modern Yorkies retain that terrier grit in a body so small you could lose it in a throw pillow. If you want a lap dog that will actually sit in your lap and not use your face as a launching pad for psychiatric episodes, this is NOT your breed. If you want a fierce little companionship missile that will love you with the intensity of a small angry star, buckle up.

Fair warning: Yorkies are loud, they bark, they have opinions, and they require actual grooming commitment or they will look like angry mop heads. They're perfect for experienced small-dog people and apartment dwellers who embrace chaos. They are not decorative.

Keeping a Yorkshire Terrier alive, thriving & mildly unhinged

Yorkies have human-hair-like coats that grow continuously and mat easily, plus they're prone to dental issues, patellar luxation (fancy term for kneecaps that get ideas), and eye problems. They also have the stamina of dogs three times their size and absolutely zero awareness of their own fragility.

  • Coat maintenance is non-negotiable: Brush daily (yes, really) to prevent matting, or commit to professional grooming every 4-6 weeks. Many owners do a practical puppy cut instead of the show-coat look β€” your dog will not care, and your sanity will thank you.
  • Dental care like your life depends on it: Small dogs get dental disease early and hard. Brush teeth regularly, use dental chews, and budget for professional cleanings. Rotten teeth = expensive emergency vet bills + a cranky Yorkie.
  • Exercise their brain AND body: Yorkies need 30-60 minutes of activity daily despite their size. They love walks, play, training games β€” they get destructive and neurotic if bored. A tired Yorkie is a less aggressively barking Yorkie.
  • Watch those tiny knees: Patellar luxation (dislocating kneecaps) is common. Avoid letting them jump from heights, jumping on/off furniture repeatedly, and don't let them get obese. A Yorkie at a healthy weight is a Yorkie that can actually move.
  • Socialize early and often: Yorkies default to thinking they're apex predators. Expose them to different people, dogs, and situations as puppies so they develop some calibration on what is and isn't an existential threat (it's almost nothing, but try telling them that).
  • Eye and ear checks: Yorkies have hair that grows into their ears and eye issues can sneak up. Clean ears weekly, trim hair away from eyes, and watch for excessive tearing or cloudiness.

Yorkshire Terrier questions you're definitely Googling at 2am

Do Yorkies actually shed or is that a myth?

They shed minimally because they have human-like hair, not fur β€” which is technically great, but also means you're doing the shedding work for them during grooming instead of finding it on your couch. So yeah, you're trading seasonal fur tumbleweeds for commitment with clippers. Pick your poison.

Can a Yorkie really be trained or are they just tiny psychopaths?

Yorkies are genuinely smart and food-motivated, so they can learn commands, tricks, and leash manners. The catch: they have terrier stubbornness that makes them argue with you about the entire premise of obedience. Train with consistency, positive reinforcement, and the understanding that a Yorkie will always think there's a better option than what you're proposing. But yes, they're trainable. Just requires you to out-stubborn a stubborn dog.

Are Yorkies good with other dogs?

Yorkies often have selective dog aggression, meaning they might befriend a 100-pound Golden Retriever while declaring war on another Yorkie-sized dog. It's random and infuriating. Early, consistent socialization helps, but genetics load the dice. Some Yorkies are social butterflies; others are tiny furry landlords who want everyone off their property. Expect unpredictability and manage accordingly.

How long do they actually live and what are the real health problems?

Yorkies typically live 12-15 years (some make it to 17+), which is excellent for dogs but a long-term commitment. Common issues beyond what we mentioned: hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) in puppies and toy breeds generally, tracheal collapse (coughing from a weak windpipe β€” common in small dogs), and eye problems like cataracts and keratitis. Work with a responsible breeder, keep them at a healthy weight, and schedule regular vet checkups. A healthy Yorkie is an annoying Yorkie, and annoying means long-lived.
