The Shih Tzu starter kit

Everything your future Shih Tzu needs to move in, annex the couch, and immediately run the household — hand-assembled by DOGSCIENCE™ for a toy chaos unit.

The Shih Tzu is a small dog with a HUGE personality and the grooming demands of a high-maintenance celebrity who never leaves the house. Originally bred as a companion for Chinese royalty, this breed is basically a tiny, walking floor mop that has somehow convinced everyone it's royalty too — and honestly? It's working. They're affectionate, clever, and absolutely obsessed with being near you at all times, which is either peak companionship or psychological warfare depending on your bathroom privacy preferences.

Shih Tzus have the energy level of a dog that was caffeinated once in 2003 and is still vibrating from it. They don't need hours of exercise, but they DO need constant mental stimulation, companionship, and someone willing to engage in their specific brand of chaos: stealing socks, refusing to come when called, and barking at literally everything that exists. If you want a cuddly lapdog that won't destroy your furniture but also won't let you have a moment's peace, this is your breed. If you hate grooming or want an independent dog, keep scrolling.

Real talk: Shih Tzus are not for the time-poor or the grooming-allergic. But if you're home-adjacent, patient, and enjoy a small dog with the attitude of a tiny, fluffy dictator, you've found your person.

Keeping a Shih Tzu alive, thriving & mildly unhinged

Shih Tzus are deceptively high-maintenance for their size. Their silky double coat mats like it's a full-time job, their teeth need actual attention, and they have enough stubborn energy to make training feel like negotiating with a furry senator. But they're also genuinely rewarding dogs when you know what you're actually signing up for.

  • Grooming is non-negotiable: Brush their coat 3-4 times per week minimum, or accept that matting will happen and you'll be paying a groomer $150+ every 6-8 weeks. Many owners choose a short puppy cut for sanity's sake. This is not optional.
  • Dental health matters: Small dogs have crowded teeth and Shih Tzus are prone to tooth decay. Brush their teeth several times a week and have them professionally cleaned regularly. This breed can lose teeth young if neglected.
  • Keep exercise realistic: 20-30 minutes of daily activity is plenty. They're toy dogs, not marathoners. Mental stimulation (puzzle toys, training games) matters more than long walks.
  • Watch their eyes: Their large, prominent eyes are prone to scratches and infections. Keep hair trimmed away from the face and watch for excessive tearing or discharge — both need vet attention.
  • Manage the barking: These dogs bark at everything. Early socialization and training help, but this trait never fully disappears. If you live in a noise-sensitive space, understand this going in.
  • Housebreaking takes patience: Shih Tzus can be stubborn about potty training. Consistent crate training and a very structured routine are essential — this isn't a dog that will naturally housetrain on its own.

Shih Tzu questions you're definitely Googling at 2am

Do Shih Tzus actually need haircuts every month like everyone says?

Not monthly, but close. If you keep their coat long (which is gorgeous but impractical), professional grooming every 4-6 weeks is standard. If you do a short clip, you can stretch it to 8-10 weeks. Between grooming, you're still brushing regularly or you're living in a mat museum. The "show coat" length you see in pictures? That's a full-time job plus a groomer. Most normal humans do a cute short cut and call it a day.

Are Shih Tzus good with kids?

Depends on the kids. Shih Tzus are sturdy enough to handle gentle children and they're usually friendly and patient. But they're also small enough that rough play can injure them, and they'll absolutely snap at a kid yanking their tail or poking their eyes. They're best with families that have older kids (8+) or very well-supervised younger children. Also: Shih Tzus are low-patience dogs sometimes, so constant chaos might stress them out.

How long do Shih Tzus actually live?

They're toy breed time travelers — generally 10-18 years, with many hitting 15+ if well cared for. This is a genuinely long commitment. You're not getting a dog; you're getting a small, fluffy family member for potentially two decades. Make peace with that before you adopt.

Can Shih Tzus be left alone all day?

Technically yes, they won't have a meltdown like a Separation Anxiety Spaniel. Realistically? They absolutely do not want to be. These are companion dogs bred to be around people. Leaving them alone 8+ hours regularly will lead to destructive behavior, excessive barking, and depression. If you work full-time outside the home, you need a dog walker, doggy daycare, or a second dog. They're not independent creatures.
